About Prostate Cancer

In the United States, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of death in men after lung cancer, accounting for about 10 percent of all cancer-related deaths in men. In Canadian men, prostate cancer is the most common cancer, where one in eight will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime, mostly after age 60. It is the third most common cause of cancer death in Canadian men (after lung and colorectal cancer), according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

However, when caught and treated early, the cure rate is greater than 90 percent, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

There are a number of treatment options for low-risk, localized prostate cancer, including prostatectomy, radiotherapy, and cryotherapy. Each comes with its own side effects that must be weighed carefully by men and their spouses and families when making treatment decisions.
